Lameness is any alteration of the horse’s gait. Such abnormalities can be caused by pain in the neck, withers, shoulders, back, loin, hips, legs or feet. Identifying the source of the problem is critical to proper treatment. Most lameness problems can be diagnosed with a complete lameness exam using diagnostic nerve and/or joint blocks to isolate the specific cause and location of the lameness. Using the appropriate imaging, such as radiography or ultrasonography, we can reach a diagnosis and decide on a plan of treatment. With the use of digital radiography, we can also consult on-site with your farrier to make the necessary corrections in shoeing to prevent and treat many lameness issues. By identifying even a minor lameness and acting swiftly to correct it, you will minimize the risk of injury to the horse and be rewarded by better performance and a longer, happier life.
